MTD Rototiller

Garden enthusiasts have a unique passion not only for the outdoors and plant life, but also for the tools and equipment used in the garden. Of these tools, one of the most important to have is a rototiller. And while the average person may not see the utility in having a rototiller, a garden enthusiast knows that every good garden starts with good soil. As such, it is in every gardener’s best interest to have a rototiller which is well-equipped to prepare the soil as best as possible. Rototillers have been around for quite some time, and there have been many changes to their design and function over the decades. Some rototillers are no longer in production, and are even considered antiques in some circles. If gardening runs in your family history, you may have one of these antique rototillers tucked away in your garage somewhere. If so, you would be interested in learning a little about your antique rototiller. One rototiller that is no longer in production is the MTD Rototiller.

MTD stands for Modern Tool and Die Company, and it was established in Cleveland, Ohio in 1933. At the time there were only 12 employees of MTD but within a year the organization had grown to employ over 60 employees. However, in these early years, MTD had not yet begun to manufacture rototillers. It wasn’t until 1954 when MTD even started making gardening equipment, when it introduced the MTD wheelbarrow. Finally, in 1958, MTD began making power equipment and then the next year, in 1959, the MTD Rototiller was introduced to the market.

Although MTD is still going strong today, it is rare to find a rototiller with the MTD name on it. MTD has grown to include corporations such as Troy Bilt rototillers or Troy Bilt products and Bolens, so although these names are affiliated with MTD, the MTD logo is not on their products. Due to the rarity of actual MTD Rototillers, they can be highly sought after in some circles. If you come across an MTD Rototiller, it would do you well to look into the value of your antique rototiller with an expert in the field of antique gardening tools. Interestingly enough, there are collectors who will pay top dollar for just about anything if you look in the right places.

While the MTD Rototiller has its own unique characteristics that make it valuable in its own right, due to the fact that these products are no longer in production they are not the best rototiller for actually using in your garden. Most garden enthusiasts agree that they want a modern garden rototiller that is simple to use yet effective at preparing the earth for planting. The MTD Rototiller may have accomplished these goals in its prime, but today the modernized rototiller provides superior performance. If you are looking for a rototiller to use in your garden, it would be wise to examine one of MTDs subsidiaries for a modern machine.
